So I'm sitting in a blue state that is bluer than the sapphire eyes of Elizabeth Taylor, thinking about doing some campaign work this weekend. Maybe some voter reg tomorrow? But I'm realizing that the real need right now is to get huge great monster wads of cash into the Obama campaign, so that they can buy saturation ads in every swing state for the next two months, and paid precinct workers, and get out the vote staff, and buy expensive skilled consultants to pitch to specialized constituencies.
I've given $200 so far and will squeeze out some more each week til election day. I think I can manage $500, but if I can pick up a little bit of freelance this month I'll do more.
Yes, o best beloved, it is time for all of us to pony up.
Here's the website:

(Or google "Obama for America" if you prefer, but watch out for spoof sites.)
And here's the link to Fundrace: http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/, where you can check to see who among your associates has bought some democracy and who has not. In the best spirit of the W Years, check up on your family, your highminded friends, your coworkers, your neighbors, and then go after them. It's way easier than cold-calling at phone banks.
Remember: you do not need to be a registered voter to donate. You don't need to reside in the USA to donate (though you do need to be a US citizen or permanent resident). An individual can give up to $2,300 per election, so if you donated before the primary you can give a full $2,300 again.

Date: 2008-09-07 04:30 pm (UTC)I've been giving in a trickle, and I have noticed almost daily requests for $5 more dollars. Which is even tricklier than I've been going, but point taken, campaign. I do think their on the ground operation will be crucial (and scares the Repugs, hence "energizing the base" instead of running to the middle)

Date: 2008-09-07 06:22 pm (UTC)I think rallying the base is crucial right now, which is why I sent money emails to everyone I know this weekend. The GOP has a weak ticket, an unpopular platform, a tanking economy, and they're trying to run on "change." I smell blood. Blooooood. I got one friend in VA to sign up for a training. I think that's a likely swing state.
I don't know if eastern PA is going to need feet on the ground for GOTV. I did weekends through October there for Kerry (Philly suburbs, Scranton, Allentown) and by election day the residents had been so oversaturated that they were sick of us all. And Act Now, Moveon and the campaign itself were overlapping one another, so this year I'm going with the Obama campaign, not Act Now.
I have a feeling New Yorkers can do best by phonebanking for money and then for votes. We are a huge font of money here. But I'll try to find out more. If you learn of a specific need or task, will you email me offlist?

Date: 2008-09-07 06:29 pm (UTC)I had the same experience in Cleveland last year that you did in PA. It felt way more like I was there for my (and local Dems') moral support than to actually make any difference. But the emphasis on voter reg this time is heartening.
I really have my fingers crossed for VA. It would be so so awesome. Take that, General Lee!
