Til now, I've been resisting the urge to post election content because a) others on my flist are doing such a good job; and b) it's gonna be a loooong 2 months. Conserve your strength, my children, for

we have a long march ahead.

The gops have been accusing us dems of enjoying bad news--e.g., apparently we are hoping that the war in Iraq will go badly and lots of innocent people will suffer, because that's the only way our candidate can beat theirs. As usual, the gops have got our number. Savvy, perceptive people, those gops. So, in furtherance of the soaring ambitions of gops nationwide I am hereby noting:

8th straight month of economic decline

6% unemployment rate

Am I pleased that this is the lead news story 24 hours after the close of the gop convention? Yes. Yes I am.

Also, has anyone noticed that McCain's brilliant health-insurance solution is to TAX EMPLOYER-PAID INSURANCE AS INCOME? Yes, the reasons not to go back to freelancing are shrinking rapidly.

The R convention reminded me of that old Doonesbury quote: "Cynical? Not me. I'm constantly amazed!" The depth of bad faith on display was almost hallucinatory, even by Republican standards.

Why aren't we having more fun with the Walter Reed Middle School thing? You know that if the D's had done that the R's would be all over it, extracting all kinds of significance.

I cannot see that Long March poster, or any other Red Guard high camp, without thinking of the ballet scene from Nixon in China.

Flesh rebels
The body pulls
That inflamed soul
That marked its trials
Into the wa-ar, wa-ar, wa-ar . . .

Onward, heathen soldiers. 60 more days.

Thanks. Honestly my eyes glaze over at the individual absurdities.

It looked thin and loserly to me, honestly, although clearly they've gotten traction off of SP. Judith Warner was good on that. Without even attacking her, simply by virtue of her own disastrousness, she's got people defensively identifying with her, like they did with W. "you think he's/I'm dumb? well FUCK YOU."

Did the fixed films strike you as very strange and off-key? Like that litany of names McCain's been called - I was just laughing - does that really work? But Daily Show didn't even seem to think it was funny.

As far as the message from Obama camp, they have one message (all they think they can deliver at this moment, I suspect), which is don't be distracted, stay on message, this is about issues. Which can look strange sometimes but I think is probably a smart move. It's a stressful week, right after the Repugs - everyone on our team seems nervous - but I still think we'll pull it off this time.

Yep, the campaign starts tomorrow. Anyone who thought the GOP would run an inept campaign or choose a stupid running mate is a fool. Fortunately the Obama campaign is not a fool.

My dad is coming for the weekend. Plus I had a spinal tap & two other tests on Tues and I am looking forward to spending the non-laundry/cooking time lying on a bed.

I am donating today though!

Just back from a long, long day with colleagues and the new students in our program. Several hundred very smart people, only a few of them from the US or interested in the US in an academic way. And yet the US election was all we could talk about. It was kinda spooky.
