Those are pearls that were his eyes.

Yes.

For those of you who were captivated (no pun intended) as I was by the Flying Dutchman in Dead Man's Chest and its motley crew, I refer you all to (what else, in this LJ?): a little art history:

The late Renaissance/early Baroque era (to which Shakespeare belongs) had a taste for what is now known as the grottesque. The word comes from grotto and refers to the elaborate artificial grottos people of means constructed in their backyards, frequently in imitation of undersea caves with moss and shells and frequently a little piping fountain, or possibly a small water organ.

Here is the Grotto of the Boboli Gardens in Florence for example.

Here is the one in the Linderhof in Germany which I think is from the 19th century in imitation of the Baroque.

Alexander Pope had one in his garden at Twickenham and of course Walpole had one at Strawberry Hill. Pope's is mostly gone, but is described here.

And as for Davy Jones and his chums, here is Arcimboldo's painting Water:

A chum, BTW, is a kind of salmon; also, a kind of bait made of bits of fish broken up and scattered on the water to lure other fish.

I'm just sayin.
