Senator Roman Hruska (R-Nebraska) on the nomination of Harold Carswell to the Supreme Court: "Even if he is mediocre, there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they, and a little chance?" (1970)

Senator Dan Coats (R-Indiana) defending Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers: "If a great intellectual powerhouse is a requirement to be a member of the court and represent the American people and the wishes of the American people and to interpret the Constitution, then I think we have a court so skewed on the intellectual side that we may not be getting representation of America as a whole."

I don't know what Coats is worried about. Seems to me the Stupid vote is getting plenty of representation these days.

That's right, Dan, because interpreting the law should never be a purely intellectual process -- that might get in the way of the courts representing the wishes of the American people.
