This morning I took my much loved 15-year-old cat to the vet and had her euthanized. She had stopped eating and had what I think must have been cancer, though it was not entirely clear.

Man, it's hard to do. You promise and promise that you're not going to subject a creature to invasive crap or extraordinary measures, and then you have to try to say goodbye before it gets bad. She was thin as a rail, and hiding under the couch; she was dying, but she still purred like a coffee grinder whenever I picked her up and rubbed the top of her head against my forehead--a gesture that she has done for years, saying goodbye when I went to work and meeting me at the door when I came home.

A sweet sweet quiet cat, and very beautiful: all grey with thick short hair, very small but with big paws.

I still have her litter mate, who is healthy and also very sweet, although a dingbat.

It's just hard, is all.

She sounds like a much loved cat, and even though 15 years is too short, you will carry the memory of her with you.
