Hero Torture... in living color
Jul. 25th, 2004 03:53 pmOK, thanks to a friend who Knows Stuff about websites, I now have some Tortured Hero pix for youall.
I couldn't get them to show up in LJ, maybe because they're jpgs or something. But I put them on a website, so you can go here to see them.
Will see if I can insert them later, when I have more time.
First is a still from one of the Rambo movies (no idea which one), in which Rambo is more or less crucified and covered in leeches and mud and not a whole lot else. I found this on the internet, and don't know the context. Don't really want to know the context, actually. Yech.
The Spy Michael is from my fav bad TV show, the much-cancelled La Femme Nikita. Here he is seen with Attractive Cheekbone Scar, from an episode near the end of the series, when he is extremely Stoic and Tortured. Note nifty Thanatos image in background.
And we have the Bestest Tortured Hero of All, Lawrence of Arabia, as portrayed by the beautiful Peter O'Toole. I thought I had a screencap of the scene where Lawrence is held down by Evil Turks and flogged, but I must have decided that was too creepy, so instead I've got a shot from just before, when Evil Turks are interrogating him.
for youall.

Date: 2004-07-26 06:06 pm (UTC)There is no end to the torment the Turks inflicted on Lawrence, is there? He is so pasty. I cannot imagine how delicately he must have been flayed to get all of that desert tan off him.
Rambo looks like he should be hanging in halves, from a hook in a refrigerated factory, and not in a good way. But I like the spooky intellectual torture implicit in the Spy Michael's confrontation with the creepy Xrays.
A seductive intro to the sheer variety of GHT!
I owe you comments. Last week was from hell. This week may be too, at least until the weekend. But the gears are turning.

Date: 2004-07-26 08:54 pm (UTC)Yez, well, it took me a while to grasp the arcane subtleties of Yahoo!Photos. There was a check box I hadn't checked, or had checked, not sure which.

Not to mention growing about 10-12 inches between book and movie. (Lawrence was 5'3" or something, and O'Toole over 6'.) Must have hurt like hell.
Rambo looks like he should be hanging in halves, from a hook in a refrigerated factory, and not in a good way.
Hee. Stallone always looks that way to me. Must be because of that scene in the first Rocky movie, when he punches out a side of beef (yes, I have seen Rocky); I watched it and had one of those weird "separated at birth" moments.
But I like the spooky intellectual torture implicit in the Spy Michael's confrontation with the creepy Xrays.
Ah, Black Dog, you do always manage to nail it. You have no idea how much this pleases me. And it matters not at all that (I'm betting) you haven't actually ever seen this show. Just as it doesn't matter that the Spy Michael got his pretteh scar the old-fashioned way: by being hung from a hook like Rambo (only, thank god, with clothes on) and beaten. What matters is that he thinks that the woman he loves arranged it. Hence his fatalistic and Sartrean wanderings among the Symbolic Xrays of Doom. (Oh, and despite his name, he's French. Isn't TV a wonderful thing?) True hero torture is spooky and intellectual.
Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it, anyhow.

Just so. If I have time, I may look for a few more: Han Solo, Feverish!Faramir, Whatsisname from Lethal Weapon, hung from a hook and... well, maybe more pix are not necessary.
Good luck with the week from hell. Mine is also shaping up to be nassty, but am nearly done with Huge Other Novel; Brideshead hovers on the horizon, winking flirtatiously.

Date: 2004-07-27 12:43 am (UTC)...I am a fountain of useful commentary.
Mm, Robert Bolt screenplay
Date: 2004-07-27 07:21 am (UTC)T.E. Lawrence: No effendi.
Turkish Bey: Do you? No. That would be too ... lucky. [regarding the bullet wound on Lawrence's arm] Where did you get this wound?
T.E. Lawrence: That is old effendi.
Turkish Bey: No, it is recent. You are a deserter. But from which army? Not that it matters at all. A man can't always be in uniform.
Re: Mm, Robert Bolt screenplay
Date: 2004-07-27 07:24 am (UTC)...is that *supposed* to have Overtones?
