Really, there's no better escapist literature than Edgar Allan Poe. I mean, who else could write a line like that and get away with it? Not Conan Doyle, not Wilde. Not, god knows, Hannibal Lecter.

Spend a couple of hours in the exotic company of Ligeia and Montresor and Roderick Usher, or pottering about in the drafty turrets and cellars of Arnheim and Metzengerstein, and the world, when you return to it, looks a good deal more rational than it did before.
