THOUSAND OAKS (Reuters) - President Bush on Friday called the worst blackout in North American history a ``wake-up call'' and said the electric grid must be modernized.

``I view it as a wake-up call,'' Bush told reporters during a visit to the Santa Monica mountains, adding that it was ``an indication we need to modernize the electricity grid.''

Hm, I wonder if anyone will notice that the Republicans and the White House have several times in the past 2 years shot down proposals by Democrats in Congress to upgrade the grid.

Random other politico garbage from a Staten Islander...I noticed all sorts of little innuendos from Bloomburg about how we need more power plants (since obviously that was the cause of all this...right) which I'm sure was him formulating his strategy on how to get us to let him put a power plant in Stapleton. He should likely watch who he pisses off since SI is the Republican swing vote for the city. Not that I think Bloomburg stands a chance at reelection reguardless of party politics.

Staten Island is the best-kept secret in NYC, and if you guys are smart you'll secede before anyone notices. Hope you get back online soon. I've no idea why the Upper West Side, of all places, got power back so fast. It's not as if we voted for Bloomberg, much less Pataki...

And I think we're over the whole desire to secede bit, at least I hope so. What will we do, join New Jersey? (Let me tell you, being able to see the lights on in Newark from out of my window last night was not fun!)
