Not as depressed by the elections yesterday as I expected to be, except for the gay-marriage vote in Maine, which was not a huge surprise, but nonetheless disappointing. But I think NY will pass similar legislation next year, which should get the momentum back.

Very happy that the voters of NYC nearly managed to dump Bloomberg, despite the grotesque inequity in spending between the candidates--Thompson's showing was more than respectable, considering.

Extremely happy (and not at all surprised) that the great big hysterical Rightwingnut effort in upstate NY bombed, and the district went for the Dem by a solid margin. Here's hoping the Rightwingnuts continue their stellar effort to drive their party off the cliff. In fact, upstate NY is no longer as red as it used to be--in a couple of years the whole northeast will look like Illinois, partywise.

Virginia no surprise. It's natural enough that they would swing back to the GOP for their governor, having generously given us 2 Democratic senators. Splitting the difference is normal in a swing state.

The only big horror is NJ, which has now saddled itself with a truly creepy guy, who looks far worse than the past GOP goons (Christie Whitman, frex). Ugh.

All in all, not the best day, but not a shocker.

Had much the same reaction. VA was to be expected, NJ was disappointing but a coin-toss (though Christie really is creepy). I'd feel worse about Maine but I think I'm just resigned to a long slog on this issue.

I was surprised that NY 23 didn't get a much stronger media reaction since it was 1) an upset and 2) a really important object lesson and indicator for 2010 as opposed to the random noise of VA and NJ. Let's hope Rush and Sarah spend lots of time on the campaign trail, next year.
