Proof that the Nobel Committee is a bunch of pinko commies, just like we always thought:

w00t!

I can't wait to hear what the National Review has to say. Ever since William F.(ucking) Buckley's racist rag thundered in outrage* against giving the Peace Prize to that "rabble-rousing demagogue" Martin Luther King, Jr., the NR has been especially rabid about the Nobel prizes. I think it's partly righteous wrath because the money comes from an honest conservative source. Shouldn't wealth from the invention of dynamite be spent on causing damage and ruination? Why doesn't Don Rumsfeld ever get considered? Or Nancy Reagan? Just the predictible, scandalous liberal bias of... uh ... the whole world.

*"For years now, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and his associates have been deliberately undermining the foundations of internal order in this country. With their rabble-rousing demagoguery, they have been cracking the “cake of custom” that holds us together. With their doctrine of “civil disobedience,” they have been teaching hundreds of thousands of Negroes — particularly the adolescents and the children — that it is perfectly alright to break the law and defy constituted authority if you are a Negro-with-a-grievance; in protest against injustice. And they have done more than talk. They have on occasion after occasion, in almost every part of the country, called out their mobs on the streets, promoted “school strikes,” sit-ins, lie-ins, in explicit violation of the law and in explicit defiance of the public authority. They have taught anarchy and chaos by word and deed — and, no doubt, with the best of intentions — and they have found apt pupils everywhere, with intentions not of the best. Sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind." ~Will Herberg, "'Civil Rights' and Violence: Who Are the Guilty Ones?", National Review, September 7, 1965

Unless, of course, he meant Image

Every time I hear some young idealist cite William F. Buckley as the honorable reason why he (or, rarely, she) has become a conservative, I haul out that quote.

You mean the economic system collapsing? I feel sure you're right.

Yes, never misunderestimate the GOP's genius strategists. In the longterm, this will usher in the Permanent Republican Majority. Getting Obama elected is all part of the grand plan.

How're things looking in FL?

Hee, no, Krugman getting the Nobel! :D

Things in Florida are bizarre. My neighborhood has two McCain signs - or, rather, it did. One of the McCain signs has been removed and replaced with a "SARAH!" sign - so I guess they're getting ready for 2012?

One of my friends told me last week that he thought Obama was naive, and I said that he may well be, but McCain is erratic and Palin is a sociopath (he already had agreed with me that she is just ugh) and I told him about the Rolling Stone article about McCain and how Michelle Obama has a cousin who's a rabbi, and what Sarah Palin's connections to the Birchers and the Jews for Jesus people are, and he's considering Obama now, or at least he told me that to get me to shut up.

There are still people who think Obama is an Arab, or that he doesn't understand what's best for Israel - but pretty much everyone who thinks that was a little taken aback by Sarah's crowing about a two-state solution (McCain had not given a straight answer about that before (http://www.jstreet.org/campaigns/does-john-mccain-support-a-two-state-solution)).

My neighbor told me there's a good video on why Obama is good for Israel. I'll try to get info on it.

I take it Jewish retirees in FL still think there's a viable alternative to a 2-state solution?

One of the McCain signs has been removed and replaced with a "SARAH!" sign - so I guess they're getting ready for 2012?

Or else they are practitioners of Imprecatory Prayer (http://www.forerunner.com/blog/2008/08/sarah-palin-sigh-factor.html). (I believe that guy lives in Florida.)

Not so much the retirees, but the followers of Moshiach generally do not believe in a two-state solution and they can be very single-issue-voter on that subject.

OMG that link! I agree with his first two reasons re Sarah, but I can't understand what happened to the end of each sentence. I mean, obviously, "She is going to be extremely popular among young voters..." accidentally left off the rest of the sentence, which reads, "for her outstanding contributions to American humor." And "She is also a great person..." left off the bit that said "despite or perhaps because of those sociopathic tendencies that she demonstrated in her response after Biden teared up while discussing the deaths of his wife and daughter."

Right?

Yeah, I love that guy. His big hope is that American voters will vote for his candidate because they are too shallow and ignerint to choose wisely. (Similar to that perennial patriotic GOP hope that most people won't vote at all.) And then, see, all good Christians should pray that McCain drops dead asap. The convoluted thinking is curlier than an Arby's frenchfry.

"Obama claims to represent the common people, but many can't help but wonder if he is really one of us. It's almost as if he is trying to be liked by everybody. Sarah Palin is just the opposite. She really is one of us and she doesn't care if you like her -- even people in her own party."

I don't think there's much to be done about single-issue voters, other than maintaining a safe driving interval. But it'll be interesting to see if the younger generation of Hispanic and Caribbean voters swings away from the one-issue anti-Castro stuff, now that Castro is out of the picture.

There's a lot of anger among the Cuban community about the limitations on visits, and on sending money and gifts to Cuba - and there was fury when no humanitarian waivers were given after this summer's hurricanes. I recommend reading this piece (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-hood/in-florida-a-congressiona_b_130384.html) from last month and this article (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/front-page/story/720272.html) in the Herald last week. There just aren't as many hard-liners as there used to be, basically. And some of them aren't single-issue voters any more.

Yeah! I mean, they might as well give it to Henry Kissinger! Or Menachem Begin! Or... oh, wait...

Not that I wasn't beside myself with fangirlish glee. Till I moved on to the latest racist outrages.

I was just reading a column yesterday about William F and his defense of Jim Crow... where was it?

You might enjoy this, http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-10-10/the-conservative-case-for-obama/ if you haven't already seen it.

Dear Pup once said to me sighfully after a right-winger who fancied himself a WFB protégé had said something transcendently and provocatively cretinous, “You know, I’ve spent my entire life time separating the Right from the kooks.” Well, the dear man did his best.

Yeah sure.

I saw the headline but didn't read his thoughts - thanks for the link. He wants to quote John Cleese? How about Upperclass Twit of the Year? All of a sudden the most spineless members of the crew are worried that some got on them; well guess what, you losers, it totally did. David Brooks, Kathleen Parker, George Will - blech. Your whole fucking "party of ideas" has been reductioed to the absurdam and ha ha you LOSE.

(I don't mean to sound complacent, actually, as I have developed a weird, out of character need to touch wood because I am so nervous about the posibility of political violence right now. I am not naturally civil!)

I owe you one more long reply from last night -- fell asleep before I saw your last one.
