chresimos, and uses bits from Oscar Wilde's poem Sphinx. I didn't know this splendid poem, so I have to thank Chresimos for that too.
For those who don't know, Hadrian was one of Rome's greatest (and most enlightened) emperors. Among other things, he built the Pantheon, one of the world's most beautiful buildings. He was a fine poet; under his rule the Roman empire reached its largest expansion (though that was due as much to Trajan as to him).
Hadrian fell in love with a beautiful youth named Antinous, from an area of the empire that is now Turkey. While in Egypt with the emperor, Antinous drowned in the Nile at the age of about 20. Hadrian, in his grief, elevated the young man to divine status, and established a religious cult in his memory. One sees thousands of portraits of Antinous all over the museums of the former Roman empire. Many portraits He is frequently dressed as Dionysios or Osiris (scroll down).
