Mar. 1st, 2006 06:29 pmOnce a year I help run a big academic conference for about a week. This means I spend a week in windowless rooms in a Hilton or Marriott or Sheraton or other dismal venue, surrounded by a peculiar mix of mall culture and high-end cultural theory. Which kind of go together, come to think of it.
But mainly, this means that once a year I watch TV. Each year it seems to get worse and more bizarre. This year there was a split between channels with 24-hour coverage of the Olympics including 6 versions of ESPN) and those with 24-hour coverage of serial killers (apparently there are 7 or 8 different Fox networks?). What is up with the serial-killer obsession? Yo all you cultural theorists: what is the connection to late-empire decadence here?
*coughcaligulacough*
