This is a passage from Rowling's interview yesterday at the Royal Albert Hall. Mildly spoilery.
Stephen Fry: You are pretty cruel to Harry.
JK Rowling: I think he has the hardest time in this book because although there are some scary things coming to Harry, in this book no one believes him. And also, he's a teenager, and to have those two burdens in life at once is quite horrible. But from now on at least everyone knows he's been telling the truth. So whatever else he has to face, he doesn't also have to deal with everyone being quite so mistrustful of him.
That's encouraging.
Vol 6 will be a jolly romp through Apocalyptic WWIII, Band-of-Brothers-style. All for one, and one for all. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home; it'll be just like Beggar's Canyon. I'm goin' in; cover my back, Ron.
Actually, though, this makes sense to me. OOTP is Harry's Dark Night of the Soul.
About the death:
JK Rowling: What I was trying to do with the death in this book was show how very arbitrary and sudden death is. This is a death where you didn't have a big deathbed scene; it happens almost accidentally. And that is one of the very cruel things about death. And of course they're now in a war situation where that really does happen. Where one minute you're talking to your friend and the next minute he's gone. And its so shocking, so inexplicable: but where did they go? I found it upsetting to write, because I knew what it would mean to Harry.
Well, this did work. I think I like it, too. Particularly as everyone else in the scene leading up to the death nearly dies first. What filmmakers call a "boo!":
Audience: Don't go through that door!!!
Innocent blonde teenager: I think I'll go through this door.
Audience: No! No! Don't do it!
[ominous music]
[door creeeeeaks open]
Cat (leaping out of chair behind door): Yeeeeow!
Audience and innocent blonde teenager: AAAAAAAAUGHGGGHHH!!!!!
But here's what worries me for vol. 6:
Darth Vademort: There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. Harry, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. Uh, I mean the wizarding world.
Harry Skypotter: I'll never join you!
Darth Vademort: Impressive. Most impressive. Dumbledore has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger! Only your hatred can destroy me!
Harry Skypotter: I shall not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that--
Darth Vademort: Oh, give it a rest, for god's sake.
